I've only been in Taiwan for less than a year and although I like it here, I want to know what will happen if I stay 3 years, 5 years, or even longer. I'm in my early 20s with an English literature degree which is pretty generic as far as qualifications come. It's fun living in Taipei, there's a lot of social events to go to, the dating scene is active, and I can explore the island during holidays and 3 day weekends.
My main concern is that I meet a lot of other foreigners who have live in Taiwan for 10+ years and most of them have the same job and earn similar pay as when they arrived. Only a few I've met have gone on to create successful businesses or get really far in their profession. So my question is, what is the likelihood of getting stuck in a dead-end teaching job if I decide to stay in Taiwan?

Living in Taiwan is like anywhere else really, the harder you work the more successful you'll become. If you feel the need to be financially successful (which seems to be important to you) then work hard enough to get ahead. I probably fall into the category of what you're talking about. I've been here 15 years and am still an English teacher. But I've also gone on to achieve other things like having kids and managing the school I work at. If you don't like the idea of being an English teacher here long term you can always get a job in your home country.
